Today was spent working in MATHia striving to reach our goals by the end of the weekend.

This was a tough week, but a good one, as I saw many students working really hard to improve their abilities with systems of equations. Thank you for your perseverance!

Here is this week's extra credit:

Week 27 Extra Credit

The 8th grade classes at Cope MS and Moore MS will be heading to Splash Kingdom at the end of the year for a celebration. A total of 408 students from Moore will be going in 3 vans and 6 buses. A total of 516 students from Cope will be going in 6 vans and 7 buses. Each van will have the same number of passengers, and each bus will have the same number of passengers.

Write an equation in standard form to represent the students from Moore MS. *

Use x to represent the number of students in each van and y to represent the number of students in each bus.

Write an equation in standard form to represent the students from Cope MS.

Describe the first step you would take to solve the system using the linear combination method.


What variable will you be eliminating?

Thursday 3/26

We continued our look at solving systems with linear substitution today in Lesson 11.4 and started to look at 12.1 Problems 1 and 2. This chapter is taking us to Linear Combinations in Problem 3. Here are a couple of examples:

Wednesday 3/25

Today we continued in Lesson 11.4 solving systems of equations using Substitution Part 2.

It takes a little bit of practice to get this technique down, but I think you'll find it quite helpful to quickly and easily find the solution of a linear system of equations.

Homework: Finish textbook pages 635-636 and 648-649.

Tuesday 3/24

Today we took a look at solving systems of linear equations by substitution in Lesson 11.3 and 11.4.

Homework: Textbook pages 631-632, 634-635. If you find this a bit challenging take a look at the Summary on page 643-644 for step by step examples.

Week 26 Extra Credit

Serena is trying to become more environmentally conscious by making her own cleaning products. She researches different cleaners and decides to make furniture polish using olive oil and lemon juice. She wants to make enough to fill two 24-ounce bottles.

Write an equation in standard form to represent the total amount of mixture Serena wants to make. *

Use x to represent the amount of lemon juice and y to represent the amount of olive oil.

The recommendation for the mixture is that the amount of olive oil must be twice the amount of lemon juice. Write an equation in terms of x and y as defined above to represent this situation.

Use substitution to solve the system of equations. Be sure to check your answer. *

Write your answer as an ordered pair (x, y)

Thursday 3/05

Today we completed and shared our responses to Problems 4 in Lesson 11.2, and Talk the Talk  which covered solving systems of linear equations by graphing. Together we discovered how to know when a linear system is  parallel, perpendicular, or neither.

Friday 2/27

Week 25 Extra Credit

Henry is the manager of a hobby store. He's recently purchased some new game packs from a wholesaler for $8 each. The wholesaler also charges a fee of $200 for each bulk purchase. Henry then sells the game packs for $12 each.

Write an equation to represent the cost to buy the game packs.

Write an equation to represent the amount of money the store will earn for selling the game packs. 

Graph these two equations. Then, determine the break-even point for buying and selling the game packs.

What is the store's profit at the break-even point?
