Today we finished our look at the real number system with last portion of Lesson 5.2.
Your homework tonight is really important. Use your work from today to help you, think critically, and give me your best effort. We need you to become an expert on everyquestion.
We continued our look at the real number system today by expanding our understanding to rational numbers, including repeating decimals in the first part of Lesson 5.2.
What are rational numbers? Anything that can be written in the form a/b where a and b are both integers and b is not equal to 0. Anything that can not be written in that form is an irrational number, which we'll talk more about tomorrow.
We took the Chapter 4 test today. I hope you felt really good about your level of expertise going into the test, and satisfied with your success coming out of it. Results will be available early next week.
We'll be taking out Chapter 4 test tomorrow. The chapter 4 summary is a great place to begin your preparations. Afterwards, jump right into the Chapter 4 pretest that you got three weeks ago.
Make sure to study tonight on your own, and then bring your questions to the online study session in The Community from 7:30 to 8:30.
Today we spent the entire class period working in MATHia. Our grading cycle ends in a couple of weeks Friday, November 21st. I expect to have many of you reach your goal.
We'll be taking our Chapter 4 Test on Thursday, and will be hosting another online study session on Wednesday evening (perhaps with some extra credit opportunities available too). Head to The Community for details.
Homework: MATHia practice (at least 30 minutes outside of class each week).
Congrats to all of those that have completed MATHia Island #1!
Here is this week's extra credit: Week 13 Extra Credit
Two friends decide to hike up and back down a local mountain. They
begin their hike at marker A, which is at the base of the mountain. It
takes them 2 hours to reach marker B, which is 2.5 miles from the base. They reach marker C, which is 4 miles from the base, after 4 hours of hiking. They reach marker D, which is 5.5 miles from the base and is at the top of the mountain, after 7 hours of hiking. Tired, they decide the rest at marker D for an hour. Afterwards they begin their trip back using a secondary "scenic" path and arrive at marker E, which is 4 miles from the base, 2 hours after they started their decent. The friends then arrive back at marker A 13 hours after they began their
hike.
Assume the friends hiked at a constant rate from each marker to the next. Carefully create a graph to represent the hike, then use it to answer the questions below.
Identify the intervals of increase, intervals of decrease, and the constant intervals for the scenario. *
What was their rate of change from marker A to B? *
What was their rate of change from marker B to C? *
What was their rate of change from marker C to D? *
What was their rate of change from marker D to E? *
What was their rate of change from marker E to A? *
Special announcement: We'll be holding our MATHia Island #1 celebration on Friday. If you've not yet finished island 1, you'll want to get that conquered before class on Friday to earn a reward.
