Congrats to all of those that have completed MATHia Island #1!
Here is this week's extra credit: Week 13 Extra Credit
Two friends decide to hike up and back down a local mountain. They
begin their hike at marker A, which is at the base of the mountain. It
takes them 2 hours to reach marker B, which is 2.5 miles from the base. They reach marker C, which is 4 miles from the base, after 4 hours of hiking. They reach marker D, which is 5.5 miles from the base and is at the top of the mountain, after 7 hours of hiking. Tired, they decide the rest at marker D for an hour. Afterwards they begin their trip back using a secondary "scenic" path and arrive at marker E, which is 4 miles from the base, 2 hours after they started their decent. The friends then arrive back at marker A 13 hours after they began their
hike.
Assume the friends hiked at a constant rate from each marker to the next. Carefully create a graph to represent the hike, then use it to answer the questions below.
Identify the intervals of increase, intervals of decrease, and the constant intervals for the scenario. *
What was their rate of change from marker A to B? *
What was their rate of change from marker B to C? *
What was their rate of change from marker C to D? *
What was their rate of change from marker D to E? *
What was their rate of change from marker E to A? *
